This months’ Takeover Tuesdays at The Sun Tavern sees our good friends Fourpure taking to the taps, with two lines dedicated to them all month.

As always, if you stop by on Tuesday you can try their beers for only £3 a pint, until the keg is empty.

Bermondsey based Fourpure, is a family run (brothers Dan & Tom Lowe) brewery. Inspired by the four vital ingredients – grain, yeast, hops & water; and their travels, it’s their attention to detail that has seen their beers return to The Sun Tavern, time after time.

We’ll be hosting some favourites, such as Shapeshifter IPA, alongside some even more adventurous brews like Beartooth American Brown – swing by and reward yourself!

NOVEMBER’S WHISKEY WEDNESDAYS AT THE SUN TAVERN WILL FEATURE ONE OF THE GODFATHERS OF AMERICAN WHISKEY PRODUCTION, MICHTER’S.

Coming straight out of their 7.5 acre, 67,000 square foot facility in Louisville, we will be featuring their four main Whiskeys – Rye, Bourbon, American & Sour Mash – each of which are carefully created by master distiller Pam Heilmann and her team.

Their attention to detail shines through at stage of their process; they toast their barrels before charring to form what they call the ‘red line’ which makes the wood’s sugars more accessible. More concerned with quality rather than quantity, their entry proof for their Rye and Bourbon is only 103 which they say allows the concentrated sugars dissolve more readily into the distillate, making for a richer flavour despite a reduced yield. Finally, they chill filter all of their whiskeys instead of standard carbon filtration to ensure that the flavour and aroma of every bottle is maintained.

As with every Whiskey Wednesday, you can either opt for a ‘beer & a bump’ or one of our bespoke cocktails for £6 every Wednesday of the month. On top of this, we have carefully curated a triplet of Michter’s based creations – the Shenk, the Valley Coin and the Kentucky Cherry.

Check out some shots below:

Valley Coin – Michter’s Rye, Nocino Amaro, Fig, Lemon & Bitter Truth Aromatic.

Shenk – Michter’s Sour Mash, Amontillado Sherry, Lemon, Orgeat & Cinnamon.

Kentucky Cherry – Michter’s Bourbon, Bold Cherry Aperitif & Cassis.

Whiskey Wednesdays at The Sun Tavern are a pretty big deal in October. Featuring a menu curated by The Dead Rabbit’s Jillian Vose and ourselves, we’ll be showcasing the delights of Slane Irish Whiskey.

On 4th October Jillian herself will be behind the bar for the evening, showing off her half of the cocktail menu, having flown in from NYC’s and ‘Best Bar In The World’ winners, The Dead Rabbit.

There’ll be a Ceilidh band from the early evening then DJ’s following on, playing classics from Slane Castle gigs of the past – where the Slane distillery is situated.

Slane Irish Whiskey goes through a triple casked process which is where it gains it’s complex qualities – toasted oak & vanilla from the virgin casks, plum & caramel from the seasoned casks, and raisin & spice from the sherry casks. All these nuances make it not only perfect for drinking on it’s own, but great in cocktails too.

If you can’t make it down on the 4th fear not, these cocktails are available every Whiskey Wednesday in October for £6 as always.

This months’ Takeover Tuesdays at The Sun Tavern sees the guys at Big Hug Brewing taking to the taps, with two lines dedicated to them all month.

For under a tenner this Tuesday, you can grab yourself a pint or three – they’re only £3 each until the taps run dry.

The Big Hug team pride themselves on their individual, unusual and innovational style. The hobo brewers with roots in King’s Cross have no actual dedicated brewery to call their own, but they don’t let that stop them from putting out quality pilsners and IPAs.

Speaking of which, we’ll be hosting some of their staples such as their traditional Austrian Bruno pilsner and their mellow Slow Loris All Day IPA. Swing by for a post-work pint that’s kind on your pockets!

This November for Non-Specific, we’re welcoming The Paddingtons’ Tom Atkin on the ones and twos with his take on non-specific rock ‘n’ roll.

In 2002 indie rock band the Paddingtons came into being, composed of Tom himself on vocals, guitarists Stuee Bevan and Josh Hubbard, and brothers Grant and Lloyd Dobbs on drums and bass respectively. After short-lived success touring with the likes of ex-Libertines frontman Pete Doherty in 2005, they’ve recently reformed to much fanfare and sold-out shows.

Since then, Tom has played countless live shows, toured the country, started a family, and become a short-lived Vine sensation – accumulating 140,000 followers before the platform was closed down in 2016. And now he’s headed to Bethnal Green to take to our decks.

This month’s flyer artwork is inspired by classic alternative rockers, Happy Mondays’ album, ‘Bummed’.. the striking cover this time reimagined in goji berry, blueberry, sugar snap pea, sweetcorn, caster sugar and peppercorn-form.

As per usual, we’ll have the delicious Vietnamese baguettes, Bánh mì on hand for sustenance, absolutely free until they’re gone.

We’ve teamed up with our usual coffee suppliers, The Roasting Shed – who are set up just around the corner in Queen’s Yard, Hackney Wick – and will be treating you to free coffee for the whole day.

The roasting shed only do one blend – for espresso – and specialise in single origin fruity and floral African coffees from Burundi, Kenya and Ethiopia and also from Central America, countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. Both the founders, Ricardo and Neil, have first hand experience working in the coffee industry in Central and South American, they really know their stuff – which is why we chose them to be our suppliers in the first place!

We’ve got former ‘The Fall’ member and front lady of Brix & The Extricated, Brix Smith-Start taking control of this month’s Non-Specific night at The Sun Tavern.

Brix will be playing her own take on ‘non-specific’ rock & roll on Thursday 14th September – she may even sing along to her own tunes with a mic.

Brix was guitarist and sung vocals alongside frontman Mark E. Smith for the legendary post-punk band thoughout the eighties, with her first album being 1983’s Perverted by Language. Brix left The Fall in 1989 but has recently reunited with fellow former Fall members Steve Hanley and Paul Hanley to create Brix & The Extricated, who released single “Something to Lose” on Blang Records late last year, and are due to release their new album “Part 2” this month.

As always we’ll be serving some rolls to go with the rock – Vietnamese sandwiches from Bánh mì Hoi-An will be free from 6pm until they run out.

September’s Whisky Wednesdays at The Sun Tavern will showcase whiskies by bottlers ‘Elements of Islay.’

Elements of Islay carefully select individual barrels from each of the distilleries on the famous scotch producing island to create their own batches of whisky for each distillery – whiskies from Islay are renowned for their peatiness, as Elements of Islay say themselves “The most important element of Islay is peat.”

Elements draw inspiration from traditional medical laboratory labels and packaging, with each batch proudly displaying its ‘Element’ symbol on the bottle. For example, Lg7 is the seventh batch from the Lagavulin Distillery. Each batch is typically blended from between 5 and 20 casks from a single distillery. These casks will be from barrels from a variety of ages (hence the lack of an age on any of their bottles) as Elements believe that “stated ages and vintages are less important than creating a top quality malt that truly expresses the character of the distillery that made it.”

As with all our Whiskey Wednesdays, you can grab either a “beer & a bump” or one of our bespoke cocktails for £5 every Wednesday of the month – scroll down to see our three new creations for this month!

August’s Whiskey Wednesdays at The Sun Tavern will feature the brand new blended Irish Whiskey, Roe & Co.

Only just released in March 2017, Roe & Co is blended from both malt and grain whiskeys matured in ex-bourbon American oak casks and with a minimum age of 5 years. Non-chill-filtered and with an abv of 45%, this smooth whiskey boasts notes of vanilla and pear  and just a touch of soft spiciness.

At the moment the liquids are sourced from elsewhere, but the owners, Diageo, are intent on building a new Dublin distillery, to be completed in 2019. The St. James’s Gate Distillery will be built just round the corner from the Guinness Brewery, and right next to the site of the historic, now demolished, George Roe distillery, from which the new liquid gets its name. George Roe’s distillery was once the largest in Ireland – covering an enormous 17 acre site – but unfortunately closed its doors in 1923 after having sales hit hard by both American Prohibition in 1919 and Ireland’s war of independence and civil war in 1920/21 – the new liquid has quite a legacy to live up to!

As with all our Whiskey Wednesdays, you can grab either a “beer & a bump” or one of our bespoke cocktails for £5 every Wednesday of the month – the three new creations for this month are the Pale Harlet, Two Irishmen, and the Roe & Rose – have a peep at the photos below:

If you haven’t tried Umbrella Brewing Ginger Beer, grab one as soon as you can! We’ll be selling bottles for £2 each every Tuesday throughout the month.

Umbrella Brewing will be celebrating the release of their new ginger beer labels which are inspired by the record sleeve for the reggae track Johnny Too Bad by The Slickers – Head Brewer Matt Armitage’s favourite tune. The labels for Umbrella Brewing Ginger Beer feature a large space dedicated to artwork, and they’ve run various label series and collaborations over time, with the original set inspired by the striking graphic designs of Decca record sleeves from the 60s and 70s.

In honour of the latest labels, The Sun Tavern will have guest DJs playing a selection of reggae tunes every Tuesday night for the whole of August.

We’ll also be selling experimental whisky-finished batch of alcoholic Ginger Beer – a collaboration with Dewar’s for Tales of the Cocktail 2017 – though this won’t be discounted. You can read more about ‘The Dewar’s Experiment’ here.

Signed to Rough Trade records and hailed as rebuilding London’s underground scene with their dirge drenched indie – the quartet are building a reputation as one of the most exciting new bands in the UK. They’ll take over our decks and play us some of their most loved tunes – anything from the 50s and 60s right up to the present day – with the only restriction being that they must fall under the banner of non-specific rock and roll.

As with the last couple of months, we’ll be serving Vietnamese sandwiches from Bánh mì Hoi-An for free until they run out – from 6pm onwards.

Throughout July, Whiskey Wednesdays at The Sun Tavern will feature small batch whiskies from That Boutique-y Whisky Company.

As with all our Whiskey Wednesdays, you can grab one of our bespoke cocktails for £5 every Wednesday of the month – we have three new creations for July: Zuidam’s Wonderland, Pluscarden and Peatside – all featuring different whiskies from That Boutique-y Whisky Co.

Also for a fiver you can also help yourself to “beer and a bump” – half a pint of a Camden Town Brewery beer (July’s Takeover Tuesday brewery) and a shot of one of the three featured whiskies: Millstone 6yr, Miltonduff 8yr or Peatside 5yr.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company don’t actually distill their own whisky – they’re an independent bottler that source small batch and limited edition whiskies from renowned brands and distilleries across the world. Each bottle has a unique informative graphic-novel style label full of fun references, in-jokes and often (shocking) puns.

James or Dave, brand ambassadors for the company, will stop by every Wednesday in July for small tasting sessions, so you can have an educating chat about their company and their whiskies.

The Mondo Brewing Company of Battersea will take control of June’s Takeover Tuesdays with beers on two of our taps for the entire month

If you pop in on a Tuesday it’s £3 per pint on each until the keg runs out!

Mondo was founded by Todd Matteson and Tom Palmer who started brewing beer together in Battersea in 2015. Their core beers include: Dennis Hopp’r, a light bodied American Pale Ale; ALL CAPS! – an American Pilsner; Rider Pale Ale, a generously hopped pale ale that is highly aromatic and finishes crisp and dry; and our favourite, Little Victories, a  juicy and fruity, well balanced Session IPA.

They also do a whole range of seasonal and experimental beers, including Coco Loco – a smoky, rich, chocolatey coconut(!) porter with hints of coffee.

Tom and some of the lads will be around on Tuesday evenings this month, so stop by for a pint or two and a chat about their beer!

June 15th will see Kieran of Saint Leonard’s Horses take to the decks for Non-Specific, Umbrella Radio’s monthly takeover at The Sun Tavern.

Kieran fronts British alt-folk masters Saint Leonard’s Horses (his surname is Leonard, his ‘backing band’ are The Horses)and has toured in support of a range of artists from Bob Dylan to The Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things and Babyshambles. The most recent album, Good Luck Everybody, was released in late 2016 and recorded in part (via an unusual connection involving Jim Sclavunos of The Bad Seeds) at Stanley Kubrick’s estate, Childwickbury Manor. Described by NME as “a surrealist, mystical odyssey of self-discovery, maximal hedonism and jaws-of-death revelation” it’s well worth checking out.

He will be playing his take on Non-Specific Rock ‘n’ Roll, which could be anything from the 50s and 60s right up to the present day.

We’ll be serving a little roll to go with the rock – Vietnamese sandwiches from Bánh mì Hoi-An which will be free from 6pm until we run out – so get there early!

For each month’s non-specific flyer we recreate an iconic album cover using whatever materials we’ve got to hand – this month we made Jon Pasche’s famous Rolling Stones lips logo out of strawberries, blueberries and cream.

Mick Jagger commissioned Pasche,  who was then a young student at the Royal College of Art in London, to produce the logo after seeing his designs at the Royal College of Art final degree show in 1970 – we’re pretty proud of our tribute!
