The Mondo Brewing Company of Battersea will take control of June’s Takeover Tuesdays with beers on two of our taps for the entire month

If you pop in on a Tuesday it’s £3 per pint on each until the keg runs out!

Mondo was founded by Todd Matteson and Tom Palmer who started brewing beer together in Battersea in 2015. Their core beers include: Dennis Hopp’r, a light bodied American Pale Ale; ALL CAPS! – an American Pilsner; Rider Pale Ale, a generously hopped pale ale that is highly aromatic and finishes crisp and dry; and our favourite, Little Victories, a  juicy and fruity, well balanced Session IPA.

They also do a whole range of seasonal and experimental beers, including Coco Loco – a smoky, rich, chocolatey coconut(!) porter with hints of coffee.

Tom and some of the lads will be around on Tuesday evenings this month, so stop by for a pint or two and a chat about their beer!

June 15th will see Kieran of Saint Leonard’s Horses take to the decks for Non-Specific, Umbrella Radio’s monthly takeover at The Sun Tavern.

Kieran fronts British alt-folk masters Saint Leonard’s Horses (his surname is Leonard, his ‘backing band’ are The Horses)and has toured in support of a range of artists from Bob Dylan to The Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things and Babyshambles. The most recent album, Good Luck Everybody, was released in late 2016 and recorded in part (via an unusual connection involving Jim Sclavunos of The Bad Seeds) at Stanley Kubrick’s estate, Childwickbury Manor. Described by NME as “a surrealist, mystical odyssey of self-discovery, maximal hedonism and jaws-of-death revelation” it’s well worth checking out.

He will be playing his take on Non-Specific Rock ‘n’ Roll, which could be anything from the 50s and 60s right up to the present day.

We’ll be serving a little roll to go with the rock – Vietnamese sandwiches from Bánh mì Hoi-An which will be free from 6pm until we run out – so get there early!

For each month’s non-specific flyer we recreate an iconic album cover using whatever materials we’ve got to hand – this month we made Jon Pasche’s famous Rolling Stones lips logo out of strawberries, blueberries and cream.

Mick Jagger commissioned Pasche,  who was then a young student at the Royal College of Art in London, to produce the logo after seeing his designs at the Royal College of Art final degree show in 1970 – we’re pretty proud of our tribute!

Stepping up to the plate for June’s Whiskey Wednesdays at The Sun Tavern is Slane Distillery with their Triple Casked Irish Whiskey.

As with all our Whiskey Wednesdays, you can grab one of our bespoke cocktails for £5 every Wednesday of the month – we have three new creations for June: Slane The Chancellor, East End Rocks and the King George Cobbler – all featuring Slane Irish Whiskey.

Also for a fiver you can also help yourself to “beer and a bump” – half a pint of a Mondo Brewing beer (this month’s Takeover Tuesday brewery) and a shot of Slane Irish Whiskey.

Slane are a young distillery, only launching their Triple Casked Irish Whiskey earlier this year. The distillery itself is actually located on the grounds of the legendary Slane Castle in the rural countryside of the Boyne Valley in County Meath. As you probably know, Slane Castle has famously hosted huge open air concerts for loads of artists including Bowie, The Stones, Bob Dylan, Neil Yound and Oasis.

The whiskey is aged in three varieties of cask: virgin casks made at the venerated Brown-Forman Cooperages, which bring notes of toasted oak and vanilla; seasoned casks that add hints of plum, banana and butterscotch; and Oloroso sherry casks from of Jerez in Spain that contribute flavours of raisin and spice.

Once the liquid has been aged, it is masterfully blended to create a uniquely complex spirit.

We’re big fans of the result and reckon you’d love it – stop by any Wednesday in June to try it out for yourself!

East End Rocks-whiskeywednesday-Slane Irish Whiskey-cocktailbar-bethnalgreen-edit-crop-06

East End Rocks – Short. Heavy on the whiskey, with subtle notes of orange and herbs.

King George Cobbler-whiskeywednesday-Slane Irish Whiskey-cocktailbar-bethnalgreen-edit-crop-08

King George Cobbler – Light and sweet hints of wine with a fruity zest, finished with a heavier drop of cognac.

Slane the Chancellor – Whiskey all the way through with bitter red fruits and an orange aroma.

The 20th May was Whisk(e)y Day the world over, and since we’re more than partial to a drop ourselves, we thought we’d do something a bit special.

Throughout the day we hosted three free Poitín masterclasses, normally priced at £25 per person. Guests got to try four different Poitíns and a Poitín cocktail while learning the history of the homemade whiskey-turned legal spirit.

Poitín is a big part of what we do at The Sun Tavern, with us having one of the largest lists this side of the Emerald Isle.

We also launched our new Whiskey Menu on the day. Having won Imbibe’s Whiskey List Of The Year for 2016/17, we’ve certainly got something to live up to.

We introduced three whiskies from our Private Collection too. These are whiskies that are extremely rare and not normally available to our customers. They will be offered on our menu at a cost price in order to give everyone a chance to enjoy something extremely special. Check out what we’ve managed to get our hands on:

The Sun Tavern Irish Whiskey Bar Bethnal Green east London

‘Dungourney 1964 Pure Pot Still Special Reserve’ – In auction originally at over £800 and available to our customers at only £30 per measure. Only 1200 of these bottles were released and are seldom seen any more!

‘Knappogue Castle 1951’ – In auction originally at £550 for the bottle and available to our customers at £20 per measure 36 years old when bottled. Was some of the last stock from the old Tullamore Dew Distillery. A true taste of history.

‘Bushmills 1975 Millenium’ – In auction originally at £200 for the bottle and available to our customers at only £10 per measure. 24 years old when bottled for the millennium. These were sold privately to investors, so it’s really rare to see a bottle on the market.

Other interesting new additions are The Boutique-y Whisky Company Single Malt, Connemara Single Malt, and the pretty exclusive Cill Áirne PX.

Come down and sip a dram!

Poitín is Ireland’s most notorious spirit, which has been going from strength to strength since becoming legal again in 1997. The purest form of whiskey they say, The Sun Tavern hosts one of the most extensive lists in the world. The tastings will take place at 2pm and 4pm and are subject to availability.

If you can’t make it on Father’s Day, we host poitín masterclass bookings for two or more people all year round. Enquire for Father’s Day classes or regular poitín masterclasses by emailing bookings@thesuntavern.co.uk

Every month Umbrella Radio take control of the music at The Sun, usually with a live DJ set from our very own John Robinson who’s joined by a guest DJ playing their own take on “Non-Specific” rock and roll – everything from the 50’s & 60’s, through Glam, Punk & New Wave, to the Indie of yesteryear and today.

This month it was the turn of David Preshaah of Hoxton Radio – a digital station founded by David in 2012. Hoxton Radio shed light on pop culture in East London with a foundation of great music, all from their studio overlooking Spitalfields Market – you can read more about them here. Other recent guest DJ’s for Non-Specific have included Drew McConnell (Babyshambles, Helsinki), Palma Violets, Superfood and Rennie (The View).

The Sun Tavern launched their new cocktail menu on the same night. The traditional Irish spirit Poitín is very much a part of The Sun Tavern’s DNA, and the new menu was inspired by other indigenous spirits from all over the world. Think Arrack, Grappa, Slivovitz, Cachaça, Pisco, Sake, Mezcal and of course, Poitìn.

To accompany all this we be served the age old peasant staple – stew. Irish stew to be exact. Made to the Duffy family recipe (Our general manager’s family!)

The festivities went on until the early hours, and all in all it was a great night – If you missed it, make sure to pop by to check out the new menu as soon as you can (we’re happy to see The Evening Standard are fans of it…) Also don’t miss next month’s Non Specific!

International Poitín Day est. 18th November 2015

The Sun Tavern has got together with Bán Poitín on the 18th of November every year to commemorate the rebellious souls that kept the spirit of poitín alive through the dark days to its overdue legalisation in 1997.

On this official day to celebrate poitín, we hope to not only get across how amazing this spirit is, but also the diversity of the liquid where it can be sampled on its own, mixed or simply accompanying your favourite half ale as a boiler maker.

Here’s what you missed on the night…

St. Patrick’s Day on a Friday?

Bound to be boisterous!

The afternoon saw the calm before the storm. The Ceilidh band set the perfect backdrop for folks popping in to pay their respects to the good Saint himself.

The bar began to busy as ‘Whiskey In The Jar’ floated through the air. It must have whispered to the crowd, as the Whiskey began to flow.

Soon after, it was Oyster Boy’s turn to lead the party. Shucking his oysters fresh from Chelmsford to give the masses some sustenance. Swallow or chew, vinaigrette or Tabasco? A couple of questions that flew around, and were quickly answered as minds turned back to Camden Ink.

Umbrella Radio DJ’s warmed up the decks with some Irish classics from Thin Lizzy & Van Morrison next to firm favourites from The Clash & The Smiths et al. Father Ted was also lurking on the blinds…

The Bán Poitìn cocktails were hitting the spot, with the Irish Coffee #2 keeping people pepped for the night ahead….not to mention the Poitìn shots, here, there, and everywhere.

Enter stage left, Dublin’s legendary DJ, Arveene, a giant in name and stature. He stepped to the decks with an eclectic mix of party bangers, Irish or otherwise, turning the whole place into a dancefloor, even though it was standing room only!

Never a dull moment….here’s to The Saint!

Stone & Wood – Takeover Tuesday – January

26th January – 2017

January saw two of our beer taps pumping Stone & Wood all month. We also had Australia day on the 26th which worked out as a bit of a send off for having Stone & Wood in as our guests.

Pat Keeble, Stone & Wood’s man ‘up over’ as apposed to ‘down under’ pushing the beer here in London popped in one cold morning to have a chat and tell everyone what’s in store for Jan!

Warming yourself up with an Umbrella Brewing Ginger Beer.

Takeover Tuesday saw a collaboration with our sibling Umbrella Brewing that meant the cloudy, fiery and alcoholic stuff was a mere 2 quid for an early week beverage.

Head brewer Matt Armitage, was kind enough to have a sit down with us to provide a bit of context as to how the ginger beer came to be…

Ginger Beer is available on our website, in many of our cocktails and not to forget at  TT & Mixo the host’s of the Umbrella Brewing Launch.

In November of 2016, for The Sun Tavern’s ever changing Whiskey Wednesday collaboration, the lads and Dave Mulligan of Bán Poitín got their heads together and came up with a slightly more alternative Whiskey Wednesday offer given that ‘Poitín Day’ falls on the 18th.

Instead of the lads behind the bar here in TST getting their hands stuck in to concocting some new liquids, Dave Mulligan called across to the London alliance of Irish bartenders to externally create some delightful cocktails using the white Irish Spirit, Bán Poitín.

These willing boys did us proud, starting with Chris Pawer (@pawarsie89) of The London Edition Hotel’s famous Punch Room (@punchroomLDN) with.

Bán Appétit

Bán Poitín, Pimento Dram, Chai Tea, Brioche Syrup, Topped with Lemon Foam.

Second, Stephen McGonigle of Pococello (@pococello).

Little Green Fella

Bán Poitín, Pococello, Luxardo Maraschino, Green Chartreuse & Absinthe.

Thirdly, Tiarnan O’Gara of Blind Pig, Soho (@blindasapig).

Vladimir Poitín

Bán Poitín, Grapefruit juice, Lime juice, Raspberry syrup & Smoked salt.

Then there was Lee Peare (@mrpeare) of Ableforth’s (@ableforths).

‘Not Able For It’

Bán Poitín, Ableforth’s Cherry Brandy, Aperol & Campari.

Finally, the man behind the brand Bán Poitín (@banpoitin), Dave Mulligan (@davemulligan).

Bánana Daiquiri

Bán Poitín, Banana Liquor, Banana & Almond purée, Lime, Sugar & Gingerbread syrup.

A November to remember.

This September over here in Bethnal Green, Dewar’s really wanted to push the boat out for this edition of the Whiskey Wednesday cocktail menu. So, given that they’re a Scotch whisky brand, the idea of pairing each cocktail with a Scotch egg came about, creating the ultimate scotch serve!

Each cocktail is only a fiver and pair it with it’s given Scotch egg for only £3 more! Make sure if you’re around Bethnal Green you pop in for scotch sake!
