The Sun Tavern is home to the world’s largest collection of poitín – Ireland’s original moonshine. For the budding hibernophile, we host intimate poitín masterclasses exploring the illicit past of the original uisce beatha.
Poitín Day
18th of November
Founded in 2015 by us at The Sun Tavern, 18th November is International Poitín Day, dedicated to celebrating the original Irish moonshine and the rebellious souls who kept it alive during its days of illegality. Year round advocates of the first Uisce beatha, we boast the world’s largest legal collection of Poitín, using it in our mixed drinks and selling it by the bottle.
Poitín Tasting
Poitín is a traditional Irish spirit that ranges between 40 – 90% in ABV, dating back to as early as the 6th century, making it the original uisce beatha. Outlawed between 1661 – 1997, poitín was made illegally… and poorly, for centuries. Luckily for us, we’ve got the good stuff.
Our Poitín masterclasses, hosted at The Umbrella Workshop, include a welcome cocktail, a structured tasting of four poitíns lead by one of our experts, snacks, and a drink to finish. For those of you enamored with the spirit, you can purchase a bottle either from the workshop or online to take home.
